Leaders need to stick close to the ground, so as to identify the issues that exist and the concerns that staff have. The ability to express our concerns to others is called assertiveness. To not tell somebody how you truly feel about what matters most to you, is considered unassertiveness. So, allowing staff to get things off their chest can be not only therapeutic for them, but necessary for our ability to address issues and concerns as these arise. Be aware, and be alert for shifts in your staff’s emotions.
Do you run out of topics to talk about? I have been asked how I managed to write up on so many topics every day on this blog. Here are some ways I gain my inspiration and ideas:
1) Read other people’s blogs and which issues are covered.
2) Listen to what pops up in a conversation.
3) Review a book, film or essay.
4) Write on ‘What do I think about…?’
5) Do some exercise and be aware of your next thought.
6) Write about a recent experience.
7) What and who inspired you today?
8) What did you learn today, and key lessons?
9) Interview somebody interesting.
10) Rewrite a previous piece and update it.
Enjoy your next conversation, and write something today!
Additional Thoughts: This blog just turned one year old! This year we will enhance our content and keep it contemporary, fresh and relevant. Let us know what you would like us to cover.
